After Dinner Speaker Skills

An experienced and successful after dinner speaker will have many skills. When compared to an inexperienced after dinner speaker, these skills will shine through. This is because a new speaker has not yet had the chance to hone the skills required for great presentations.

Of course, given the massive variety of different messages an after dinner speaker might be asked to get across throughout their career, communication skills are a must. However, humour is a vital string to the speaker’s bow if he or she is to keep the audience from becoming bored. Because the after dinner speech takes place during a natural lull in the proceedings, they must keep the audience entertained to prevent post-dinner lethargy taking over. Aside from humour, brevity is another string to the after dinner speaker’s bow. The ability to get a message across succinctly is always important.

In-depth knowledge is also vital to the after dinner speaker. It is also very important that the after dinner speaker can demonstrate good, solid knowledge of the topic about which they are speaking. Without a good grounding in the relevant subject matter the audience is unlikely to take them, or their message, seriously. As far as knowledge is concerned, some responsibility lies with the person booking the after dinner speaker. Hiring a reality show star to talk about implementing new sales techniques is an unwise decision. All the same, even respected and knowledgeable speakers should be given some basic grounding in the company at which they will be speaking.

Another major skill that any good after dinner speaker will be able to demonstrate is their ability to understand an audience and its needs. Of course, this does not mean that audiences should neglect to provide background information. In the past, many an after dinner speaker has made faux-pas through failing to be aware of the audience’s needs.

You Might Need A Motivational Speaker

A motivational speaker is obviously not a life or death necessity, so perhaps the question shouldn’t be do you need one, but could a motivational speaker help you in some way. Whilst no-one truly needs a motivational speaker, almost everybody could reap the rewards of employing one in one way or another. Everybody, regardless of age, occupation or personality will have a time when they aren’t trying their hardest or achieving everything they can be. When faced with this type of situation, a motivational speaker is needed.

Many of the very best motivational speakers work solely as speakers and tour venues on invites from various organisations. They almost always charge a fee. Regardless of the money spent on getting a motivational speaker in, the results they can bring whether tangible or not, are almost certainly worth the investment.

Schools sometimes employ a motivational speaker to deliver strong messages to students. It is often the case that the speakers have idiosyncrasies and humorous or interesting presentations. A lot of the time the motivational speaker works to make students question their beliefs and perceptions about themselves and others and challenge prejudice.

In an educational setting the motivational speaker also works to raise attainment. In such situations improving self esteem and delivering the message that each student has control over their own future form the major part of the presentation.

Employing a motivational speaker is not uncommon in some very large companies. Whilst this isn’t a frequent thing, it does happen at training days and large conferences. A motivational speaker can improve morale when staff are flagging and productivity is reduced. He or she will try to instil a shared goal and vision in staff. Morale is always higher in companies where large proportions of the staff share a goal and a belief that they can achieve it. This in turn produces a better working atmosphere, happier and more productive staff.

Take A Look At Your Website Through New Eyes

It’s hard for an author or speaker today to effectively promote their book or their speaking services without a website, even if they don’t do a lot of sales on-line.   However, there is still the misconception that having a website is just a matter or purchasing a template or finding someone on Craig’s List.

There are a number of tests you should put your website through to make sure it is doing what it should, even if you don’t have a complicated or flashy website.  With the Internet making the world our marketplace, and more and more people using websites as part of their marketing, competition can get rough.

First impressions are key on the Internet.  And that impression can last less than a minute as click happy page viewers come and go.  How would you answer these questions about your website?

1.    Do People Know Where They Are Right Away?

Does your logo have a visual meaning and describe your business?  Before visitors start to read, they see, and so it is critical to grab their attention fast.  Convey the result people will derive from your website through pictures and other attention grabbing graphics.

Words are important as well, though, so make sure your company name is clearly visible immediately and that you have a tagline that tells people what you do.  It is also important for every page to have a powerful title that communicates to your viewer immediately where they are and what they can expect from the page.

While it’s okay to be creative, your website is not the place to be coy.  Make sure your visitors are aware of who you are and what you can offer them right away.

2.    Have you checked out your computer on various viewing platforms and browsers?

A website will not look the same on all computers.  What looks great on Firefox might be a mess on Windows Explorer, and even on different versions of each.  Check to be sure.  Ask people you know and trust to view your website on at least 5 different monitor sizes, Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 operating systems, and on PC as well as MAC computers.

If your customers use mobile internet, you will want to check several phones as well, including iPhone and Blackberry.  The differences in the way your site looks between different platforms might surprise you.

3.    How functional is your website?

The most annoying thing a website visitor can experience is slow loading pages. In most cases, that potential customer clicks away before even seeing what you have to offer and becomes a former potential customer before you know it.

Make the effort to walk through your who site, page by page, as though you are your perfect customer.  Is the page load time fast enough?  Do all links work and direct to the pages you want them to direct to?  Do you see spelling errors or other grammatical problems?  Is your contact information readily available?

The reason to go through the Website Reality Test is to ensure that your potential customers are not driven away but instead are welcomed into your website.  Make it easy for them to get around your site, find what they want (and what you’re selling) and become your customer.

When To Use Business Speakers

The use of business speakers is associated with prestigious and successful companies, and no doubt their prestige and success is owed, at least in part, to the innovation, ideas and motivation offered by business speakers. The business speakers are experts in their own area of business, whether it is technology, human resources or manufacturing. In addition to this expertise, their public speaking training means that they are effective communicators.

Because many people, even the managerial staff who hold the responsibility of organising events, are unsure about whether they require business speakers, here is a few examples of events which might be improved by the attendance of business speakers.

One example is training days. This is because the business speakers in question might well be advocates of a new technology or technique which is being introduced to the company and by telling the audience about success storied associated with it, enthusiasm is likely to be boosted. Furthermore, the business speakers might be experts in that particular field and may be able to offer information and insight that the company manager could not.

In the complicated process of business takeovers, tensions can be extremely high. Business speakers with knowledge of people management and team work may be able to help reduce tension and help with the training of new and old staff.

Another example of a use of business speakers is within business and industry faculties of colleges and universities. At graduation ceremonies or workshop days, the speakers can be invited to speak for a short while about their experiences offering advice to students and teachers alike. At graduation ceremonies, as students leave to embark on their new careers, business speakers could talk motivationally and passionately.

The number of events which could be improved upon using business speakers is limitless. Any company which carefully considers the investment of paying for the speakers against the outcomes is sure to be impressed with the business speakers’ performance.

Motivational Speaker And Education

Nobody can really doubt the impact that a good motivational speaker can have. In the media we see daily examples of good motivational speakers, particularly in the world of sports. History also underlines the importance of a motivational speaker, as the best and most well known leaders knew how to make an inspiring speech. Nowadays, demand for motivational speakers is higher than ever and they are becoming a staple fixture at corporate events. According to recent press stories, UK schools are even hiring them. But do they have a place in schools?

Some head teachers argue that they most certainly do. In those schools where there are problems with disaffection and lack of ambition, using a motivational speaker helps to improve things, so they argue. In schools with these problems, the aim of the motivational speaker is to try to encourage the youngsters to take responsibility for their won futures. And according to many teachers, it is working.

Some schools hire a motivational speaker to speak to children at very important times of their educational lives, such as just before their exams start. This is because these are the times when young people are most likely to be feeling anxious and suffering from low self esteem. Those in favour of the use of a motivational speaker in schools claim that they can boost both self esteem and exam results.

Not all parents will be inclined to agree that paying a motivational speaker is the best use of government money, particularly when there is always need for more computers and other technology. Regardless, many head teachers are adamant that the idea brings with it results. Maybe now is the time to look into what a motivational speaker can offer to our young people.
